The evolving nature of ethernet services

Ethernet technology has become the standard for today’s carrier and enterprise network architectures. Its simplicity, availability and support for IP-based applications have enabled its dominance from large corporate operations through to small home networks.

Telstra Wholesale’s Executive Director Products Trevor Brunton says telecommunications networks are constantly changing to better support the needs of customers.

“The advantages of Ethernet interfacing for connecting enterprise switches and routers are undeniable,” Trevor says.

“However, telecommunications services are going even further by offering Ethernet as a service. Directly interfacing to the enterprise network enables WAN services to offer more than basic point-to-point interconnection.

“Taking advantage of Ethernet capabilities within the telecommunications network enables additional features such as aggregation and switching which further enhance the effectiveness of enterprise WAN architectures.”

Some examples include:

  • telecommunications WAN services now provide Ethernet interfacing, enabling direct connectivity into an enterprise/residential network, with no interface cost.
  • customers no longer need to purchase bandwidth in amounts defined by the telecommunications network hierarchy (resulting in wastage and excess cost).

Services now offer bandwidth in increments that directly align with enterprise/residential needs.

Promoting integration

Enterprise networks are continually evolving to support the integration of voice, video and mission-critical business applications. These applications have diverse performance and bandwidth requirements, and have traditionally forced the deployment of additional WAN capacity or parallel circuits. Ethernet WAN services are directly aligned to these applications and are able to support the changing, dynamic nature of individual enterprises.

General Manager Data Products Bryce Blacker says Telstra Wholesale has developed its data solutions to better support the needs of enterprises and carriers. Wholesale currently offers two products within the domestic Australian marketplace:

“These products provide direct Ethernet interfacing for ease of connectivity, as well as a range of Ethernet service options,” Bryce says.

“Our Business Grade Ethernet product offers flexibility and connectivity across a switched Ethernet infrastructure and is ideally suited for metro applications.

“Our Carrier Grade Ethernet product is built on Telstra Wholesale’s national Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) transmission network, providing customers with the coverage, resiliency and performance required for mission-critical and converged, multi-service applications.

“At Telstra Wholesale we fully appreciate the importance of Ethernet to our valued customers and are dedicated to extending our comprehensive suite of data products further and bringing innovative Ethernet services to market, leveraging this world-leading Next IP® Generation network.”
